getting ready for groundbreaking and a new stadium here. we'll have that and the forecast coming up. >> lawrence looks tough next to that tractor. here's a look at the fog across the golden gate bridge. the full morning commute coming up. >> good morning, it's friday, october 19. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it's 5:00. police are looking for suspects they say fired on them during a chase through the western addition. cate caugiran is near the scene with what set off this incident. cate. reporter: it was a minor traffic stop that they were trying to pull these suspects over for a broken license plate light but look, as you can see, it ended in a dramatic fashion. that taxicab that their car crashed into and the car itself are still on scene. we have video from earlier. san francisco police say this all began at around 2:00 this morning just a few blocks from here at ellis and laguna. that's when officers say they were trying to pull over a car

for a broken license plate light. and that is when the suspect's car tried to get away. not only that, they believe that the suspect or suspects fired shots on officers. as they tried to catch up to this car at eddy and franklin there was a crash with a cab. after that the suspects tried to run away. police arrested the passenger of the car but one man is still on the loose. they believe it is the driver of the car. it's still an active scene, officers gathering evidence from the taxi and the car. right now they have the passenger in custody. they want to gather more information as time progresses at this time. they set up a perimeter to look for the suspect but said it's such a wide area. they did take that down. these suspects are not from san

francisco but other than that we only know that they are two males and we are still waiting for more information. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cb 5. police are conducting a homicide investigation in a residential neighborhood. last night a body was found near the intersection of voltaire and 107th avenue a block away from the foothills square shopping center there. investigators not releasing any further details on that. mandatory evacuations are in effect tonight for residents in the clear lake area of lake county. a 300-acre fire is burning near the community in lower lake. cal fire shut down highway 29. they say the flames are threatening more than 60 homes. residents in twin lakes are also evacuating voluntarily. fire crews have the blaze 20% contained. the head of oakland's port commission has been placed on paid leave over a strip club controversy. executive director omar benjamin is ordered to step down during the investigation. the port is looking know

allegations that maritime director james kwon spent more than $4,500 of public funds at a texas strip club. that happened back in 2008. no word yet on kwon's fate. san jose police department is arrested one of their own. officer jeffrey enslen is suspect of committing grand theft as a result of time sheet fraud. the department's criminal investigation detail caught the discrepancy after a nine-month investigation. enslen is on paid leave while being booked at the santa clara county jail. the san mateo bridge is shutting down tonight at 10:00. it will close for repair work. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec joins us now. this work is going to take crews two weekends to complete. >> reporter: yeah. the san mateo bridge behind me is going to be closed this weekend and next weekend. as you can see at the toll plaza everything is running smoothly right now. but it's going to be closed athe 10:00 tonight through -- at 10:00 tonight through 5:00 monday morning.

if you have driven around this area within the past several weeks you have probably seen these signs along the highway. they have been warning commuters. caltrans crews will replace and remove part of the bridge deck. there's a cracked beam which is part of an expansion joint. the crack was discovered in 2010. caltrans put in a temporary fix and this will be a permanent one. as usual, this bridge closure is strategically timed. >> one of the most significant factors though is that there are no 9ers games for either weekend. and that's big because 9ers games always attract a lot of attention on the san mateo bridge. >> reporter: so traffic is expected to be a little lighter this weekend. the total project is going to cost $3 million from toll funds. the san mateo bridge spans 7 miles from foster city to hayward. it carries 92,000 vehicles per day so a lot of those drivers are going to be looking for alternates. you can take the dumbarton bridge, highway 237 or you can

go up north and use the bay bridge. live on the san mateo bridge, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. bay area drivers may finally be feeling relief at the pump as national gas prices have dropped for an 11th straight day. according to aaa's daily fuel gauge report, san francisco is still the highest local average and the second highest in the state at $4.60 a gallon. oakland took second at $4.51 while san jose came in at the region's lowest price by a penny. this might hurt. nationwide prices have dipped to $3.72 a gallon. >> almost a dollar more. >> bummer. 5:05. giants season on the line after they lost to the cardinals for the third time in the best-of- seven. dennis o'donnell is in st. louis with highlights and

reporter: good morning from st. louis. it's going to be do or die for the giants tonight because last evening, tim lincecum gave up two runs in the 1st and was chased in the 5th inning. matt holliday with the shot to center. reaction. nice job by angel pagan to trap the ball but hector sanchez dropped the relay as matt carpenter touched home plate. that made it 3-1. lins cam four 2/3, four runs, three walk. giants lose 8-3. >> extremely disappointed because you find like you can pick your team up in a situation like this. when you don't do it, not much farther to fall i guess. >> reporter: so they have to win tonight to extend the series and bring it back to san francisco. barry zito will be on the hill to see if he can keep the giants season alive. frank, michelle. >> thanks. an american league champion has been crowned. the tigers miguel cabrera going deep on cc sabathia out of vallejo, deep in the fourth, gone, detroit pummeled the yankees 8-1. they locked up their spot in the world series next week. it's the first time the yankees have been swept in the best-of-

seven series since 1976. it's 5:06. let's get another look at weather. lawrence is out in san jose. >> reporter: the mascot and earthquakes already doing the groundbreaking by himself. they are building a new stadium here for the earthquakes. they are trying to set a brand- new record, too, for the largest groundbreaking ever. i just got dirt dumped on my feet by q! they are trying to set a world record for the guinness book of world records for the biggest groundbreaking ever. they have 5500 people coming out. they are trying to get more so you can come out and get one of these shovels, meet queue and the whole gang. the weather should be good although we are seeing changes with the sea breeze. it's mild to start out the day a lot of 60s muggy to begin this morning with drizzle at the coastline. flew the day a little bit of sunshine in-- through the day, a little bit of sunshine

inland. temperatures up in the warmer spots as high pressure gives way to the low off the coastline. so changes coming. those offshore winds are long gone. staying with the temperatures in the 90s. highs today in the low 80s in the warmest spots inland. as you approach the coastline, you're going to see some more clouds and the cooler weather, too. and you know what? this weekend it looks like a decent weekend but well, it looks like things are going to be changing coming up. in fact, we have some rain in the forecast. we'll have more on that and more on queue and see how far he gets here coming up in a few minutes. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> he is working harder than anybody. all right. thank you, lawrence. way to go. all right. let's go out towards the bay bridge. everything looks great this morning. so it's "friday light." we keep checking our chp reports for any new incidents. it's quiet out there on bay area roads. a little bit of overnight roadwork but a lot of it was picked up within the last few minutes by 5 a.m. to our maps we'll show you what else is going on. here's a live look at the silicon valley ride. westbound 237 still looks great. if you are trying to head out of san francisco that connector ramp remains shut down for about another hour.

so maybe less than that on that southbound 280 to southbound 101 connector ramp. caltrans crews are hard at work this morning. the nimitz 880 through oakland not too bad past the oakland airport coliseum and all the way down into hayward. and a quick check of the south bay now. when you look you can see free and clear on all of our live drive time sensors no delay through downtown. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. a prospective oakland politician is one of the city's latest crime victims after being robbed at gunpoint. dan kalb was approached by an armed robber near his home at 8:30 wednesday night. ironically he was returning home from a neighborhood crime prevention meeting. >> now i know how some people feel when they are crime victims. i was lucky. there are some people in our city who are not lucky who are shot, permanently injured or murdered. >> kalb was not harmed as the robber made off with his iphone

and wallet before fleeing. 5:09. the bay area teenager who was denied boy scout's highest honor because he is gay is getting support. 400,000 signatures hand- delivered to ryan andresen. the 18-year-old still wears his uniform despite being kicked out of the moraga troop. his family met with the scouts behind closed doors yesterday hoping for a policy change. >> the response back was pretty much the same, this is a national policy, we are told to follow the national policy. >> getting my eagle award taken is totally devastating. hearing that it's happening to other scouts is also totally devastating. >> andresen is still hoping to receive the honor at the annual eagles ceremony in may but has already gotten several pins from other scouts as a show of support. the family of a murdered hercules woman is holding her funeral today. services for susie ko will be held at st. patrick's church in rodeo at 10 a.m.

ko was found stabbed to death in her hercules home on october 5. a couple was arrested last week near seattle in connection with her murder after they were spotted driving her stolen car. other bay area headlines, today the family and friends of missing girl sierra lamar will be privately remembering her on her 16th birthday. lamar went missing on march 16 on her way to catch a school bus in morgan hill. volunteers will hold another saturday search for the girl tomorrow. plans for the downtown san francisco transbay terminal tower received final approval yesterday. the building, which will be at first and mission, will be the city's tallest building at 1,075 feet high. several groups have complained about the shadows the building will cast on public spaces and parks. starting on saturday, the new 669 area code will be introduced down in santa clara county. only new phone numbers will carry the new area code of 669. for all calls everyone in the region will now have to dial 1 plus the area code before

video. this is from a surveillance camera a you can see th a store clerk may have thought he was running for his life in this surveillance video from a smoke shop in maine. you can see the clerk flip over a wall and run out with a masked man on her homes. investigators don't know what kind of crime the man intended to commit. the clerk got away unharmed. maybe time for a job change. >> let's check the roads. >> is it "friday light"? >> it is. we love being able to say that because some fridays we're not able to. so far, so good all across the bay area, no major hot spots. what we have is a big bridge closure where we'll be talking about that this morning. so the san mateo bridge is shutting down. in fact it's shutting down next weekend, as well. they are doing repair work,

some seismic retrofitting work. use the dumbarton bridge or bart. anne makovec will be talking about that some more this morning. on the maps and live traffic sensors live look through the altamont pass. we are just now seeing a few brake lights on our traffic sensors but you can see it's not enough to impact drive time. friday light through livermore and the dublin interchange. this is one of our first spots to back up looks great so far through antioch, not seeing any major roadwork all the way towards pittsburg-bay point and concord. and a look at the south bay where we have our live drive time sensors. traffic is moving at the limit tonight across 280, the guadalupe parkway,

and 101. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." for more on your forecast we are going live to san jose to find lawrence and looks like you got some female friends with you now. >> that's right. we got the shaker girls up this early in the morning. i'm here with mia and iris. they were so kind to get up early this morning. this is not a bad place to be. you probably don't have to roll out of bed to go to an earthquake game early this morning. how is it so far? >> it's been great. we have an amazing season. it's a great time to be a soccer fan all over the bay area. we are number one in the league getting ready for play-offs and new stadium. so it's perfect. >> it is only i think two more games and then it's the play- offs? >> yup. >> and they are looking awesome this year. >> yeah. we are on fire. we are -- our theme is we never say die. we have a lot of come from behind wins. it's been very exciting. our players are pumped and we are just really excited for the new stadium to open in 2014. >> that's right. and that new stadium they are

having a groundbreaking this weekend. eyery, you have to be excited. you have a whole new place to cheer in. >> so pump. mia couldn't have said it any better. we are just excited. groundbreaking this sunday before the l.a. galaxy game. it's going to be phenomenal. bring your own shovel. the more the merrier. right now we have about 5500 coming in and anybody who is not doing anything on a sunday, come on down. >> and it will be a guinness book of world records if you get the 5500 out here. of course, they have to break 4500 but they are expecting maybe even to get more. so get one of these cool shovels if you come out or bring your own shovel. it's going to be fun. around the bay area we have seen changes with low clouds and fog moving in. so we have even got some drizzle out at the coastline early on. the roadways are a little slick outside. it looks like though toward the afternoon we'll find some sunshine and the temperatures, it will be cooler but not bad inland. you will have warm 80s in the

warmest spots inland. the winds that brought us offshore winds getting out of the way so the low approaching the coastline bringing big time changes next week. we are expecting warm temperatures in the south bay lots of sunshine up in the 70s in san jose, elsewhere around the bay area going to feel that effect of the sea breeze but the east bay looking okay. no 90s today but you will find a couple of 80s in the warmest spots. and then inside the bay low clouds and fog a little longer to break up. that means we'll keep the temperatures cooler for today and, of course, at the coastline, only in the 60s. the next seven-days, though, what a changes. we are going tore record- breaking temperatures. yesterday. now it looks like chance for rain toward monday, tuesday and wednesday. i'm glad they are doing the groundbreaking on sunday because this could be one big mud puddle towards monday and tuesday. so big changes coming our way. but some very exciting stuff happening in san jose. that's the latest from here, guys. back to you.

martyr for the cause. he was arrested wednesday as part of an elaborate fbi sting. jerry sandusky says his child abuse conviction violates his rights. lawyers filed a 31-page document for him yesterday. in it, 68-year-old jerry sandusky asked for charges to be tossed or new trial. one of his accusers 18-year-old aaron fisher is speaking out now. fisher told "people" magazine he has written a book about the entire ordeal. 5:21 right now. staking their claim. the big win for the 49ers over the seahawks. >> plus all that talking and texting can be a pain in the neck. why doctors say they are seeing new patients come in all because of their cell phone, michelle. >> hm. interesting. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

few minutes. the big game kicks off tomorrow at noon. >> yes, we are talking about cal-stanford's big football matchup 114th big game to be held at the newly renovated memorial stadium in berkeley. there is the axe. normally the game is played on the third saturday of november. they switched it to october and that means the traditional friday night bonfire at the greek theater will not happen this year. that's because bob dylan already reserved the greek. he has a concert there. with the national spotlight on them and first place on the line the 49ers gritted out an ugly winner to beat up the seahawks. it was a struggle throughout but walker broke through for the only touchdown and smith a sack in the final minutes sealed the 13-6 win. and first place in the nfc west for the 9ers. our play of the day. oregon taking on arizona state. we're talking football in tempe. ducks backup quarterback byron bennett tries to take a busted play in. he is going down, he is going

francisco. the search for a gunman happening right now. what we just learned about the suspects. >> grab your shovel head to san jose if you want to break a new record and build a new stadium. we'll talk about that and your weather coming up. >> and don't be caught off guard this weekend. san mateo bridge is shutting down beginning at 10:00 tonight. we'll tell you why coming up. all right, liz. good morning, everyone. it is friday, it's october the 19th. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 5:30. exclusive new details in a developing story in san francisco. police are searching for a gunman who fired shots during a high-speed chase. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran with who police think may have been behind the wheel. she joins us now with the latest. cate. >> reporter: frank, michelle, our sources are telling us that this driver is an oakland rapper with potential gang ties. this is just new information that came to us. as you can see behind me now, police are cleaning up that part of the road that they had blocked off for their investigation. now, we're learning this whole thing actually started because

of a minor traffic violation. officers say they tried to pull over a car because of a broken license plate light. sfpd said it started around 2 a.m. a few blocks from here at ellis and laguna where officers flashed their lights at the two male suspects in the car. the police officers say the car appeared to pull over but then took off quickly stopped and that's when officers heard shots fired and stopped their car. the suspects then sped away. and by the time police could catch up, the suspect car crashed into a taxicab. >> don't know why they rammed me. maybe because they had a gun in the car? they could be wanted. we don't know who the driver is at this point. we have a person at the station that we believe is a passenger. some of the stuff around the car shows that they are not from san francisco. but other than that, i don't know why they ran. >> reporter: now, this is an ongoing investigation. officers say thankfully, there were no injuries. the taxicab driver did have a minor hand injury. now, again, they are about to reopen that part of the road.

department while being booked at a santa clara county jail. a fire in lake county is threatening homes and prompting evacuations up north. the fire is burning near clear lake. this morning, highway 29 remains shut down. cal fire says flames are threatening more than 60 homes. people in twin lakes are voluntarily evacuating. the fire is 20% contained. repair work on bay area bridges continues. this time the san mateo bridge will be shut down over the weekend. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec joins us now with more on that repair work that will close the bridge two weekends in a row. >> reporter: you can see behind me the bridge is still open. i'm at the toll plaza on the san mateo bridge but it's going to be closed at 10:00 tonight through 5 a.m. monday morning this weekend and next weekend. i'm here with caltrans spokesman bob haas to tell us more about the project. this is all because a crack was found in the bridge?

>> that's right. two years ago during the regularly scheduled inspections, our bridge inspectors found a crack in a wishbone shaped girder where the tressel meets the high-rise so we repaired the crack by putting steel plates above and below it. but in the meantime, we went back and just designed a completely new system for that part of the bridge. >> reporter: so that was a temporary fix. this is going to be the permanent fix. how involved of a project is this going to be this weekend? >> well, it's fairly complex. we are going to have a 600-ton crane out there pulling out entire sections of the deck. and then placing in prefabricated new sections of the deck. so it's a remove and replace with, you know, the newly designed sections being put in place. >> reporter: of course this closure, as usual, strategically timed. this weekend was a good one for what reason? >> well, there's never a good time, obviously to completely close a bridge. what works in our favor is there are no 49er games this weekend and the 49ers games always generate a lot of

traffic on this bridge. so all things being equal not having the 49er games was one of the things -- one of the factors that made us decide on these two weekends. >> reporter: thank you. the closure from 10:00 tonight to 5 a.m. monday morning. some of the alternates to consider, highway 237, the dumbarton bridge, or go on up north to the bay bridge. right now live on the san mateo bridge, anne makovec, cbs 5. for the 11th straight day the national average price of gas dropped by another few cents a gallon. experts say the price slide is typical for this time of year as the travel season begins to wind up. and those price dips are giving bay area drivers some relief. according to aaa's daily fuel gauge report, san francisco still has the highest local average of 4.60 the second highest in the state. oakland is next at 4.51. and san jose is 4.50, the lowest prices in the region. that means lawrence karnow could probably fill up his car because he is live in san jose right now where the earthquakes are getting ready to brake

ground on a null stadium. -- getting ready to break ground on a new stadium. you got any friends now big guy? >> they all left me. it's pretty early in the morning. we'll have more folks in a little bit. this is the spot where they are going to be building the brand- new stadium for the san jose earthquakes. and, of course, the earthquakes enjoying a great year. they are about to head to the play-offs. but yeah, they are going to have in new stadium and a groundbreaking ceremony this weekend and it looks like a world record-breaker at the same time. so it is going to be a great weekend to come out here and if you want to enjoy it. but we have some changes in the weather. if you haven't been out the door, you will see this. low clouds and fog along the coast. some drizzle showing up out toward the beaches, as well. the temperatures, fairly mild. mainly in the 60s and it's very muggy outside. but as we head through the day, that ridge of high pressure is getting out of the way. so it looks like we are going to see some cooler temperatures. still some 80s in some of the interior valleys. we'll have a lot of those numbers into the 60s at the coastline and 60s inside the bay some 70s in toward the san

jose area. big changes though coming up. we have the rain in the forecast. we'll talk more about that in a minute. right now let's check out the roads with elizabeth. >> unfortunately we're gearing up for some bad traffic days the early part of next week so yeah, be a little extra careful for next week. we are nice and dry and "friday light." looking great across the bay area. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is always usually our best indicator of how things are moving everywhere. you can see no metering lights, no delay into san francisco. so yeah, pretty quiet so far across the upper deck. other parts of the bay area, still looking good across the golden gate bridge but you will notice fog. it's pretty dense in spots this morning. so visibility, you will notice that being an issue especially on the southern part of the span there heading towards san francisco and doyle drive. northbound 101 looks okay past the waldo tunnel. westbound 580 a few brake lights now through the altamont pass and livermore but your drive times still quiet 17 minutes through there and the dublin interchange. that is traffic. back to you. >> thank you. 5:37 now. people from all around the world are showing support now

her murder after they were spotted driving her stolen car. other bay area headlines, today the family and friends of missing girl sierra lamar will be privately remembering her on her 16th birthday. lamar went missing on march 16 on her way to catch a school bus in morgan hill. volunteers will hold another saturday search for the girl tomorrow. the case of murdered nursing student michelle le is heading to the jury. in closing arguments prosecutors called suspected murderer giselle fernandez a sociopath. le disappeared from a nursing class in hayward in may of last year. her body was found four months later. starting saturday, the new 669 area code will be introduced in santa clara county. only new phone numbers will carry the new area code of 669. for all calls everyone in the region will now have to dial 1 plus the area code before dialing a 7-digit number. the giants put their season on the line tonight in st. louis after losing game 4

vi check it out. this meteor that lit up the bay area skies on wednesday night. the meteor man shared this video with cbs 5. nasa researcher captured the event on a network of computers and highly sensitive cameras. the meteor actually entered the atmosphere off the coast of monterey and made landfall somewhere in the north bay. we have more meteor images at our website so check them out

this is the kilauea volcano. some amazing pictures coming out of hawaii this morning. take a look. it's the kileaua volcano. right now the summit a lava lake has formed and reached the highest level since it's been opened about four years ago. the level rises and falls but right now it's just 150 feet below the opening. the scientists say it could mean another eruption is imminent. >> oh, boy. yeah. hope it stays right there, though. but it's cool to look at. >> oh, yeah. a pregnant woman was kicked off a seattle bus this week because her sick child's diaper was too smelly.
